Why Vegans Don’t Believe In “ex Vegans”
can you really be an ex-vegan? or were you simply eating a plant-based diet?
as more influencers announce that they’re no longer vegan, the response is nearly always the same: “you were never vegan” or “you were plant-based, not vegan”. but is veganism a diet, a lifestyle or a belief? and if our beliefs can change, does that mean someone really can become an ex-vegan?
as someone who has been vegan since 2007, i wanted to explore why vegans find the idea of “ex-vegans” so difficult to accept. we’re talking about the vegan-influencer-to-ex-vegan pipeline, creators profiting from veganism while it was trendy, gaz oakley’s decision to eat animal products again and whether the vegan community’s response can sometimes feel elitist or abrasive.
can you be an ex-vegan? were these influencers ever truly vegan? and does telling someone “you were never vegan” protect the meaning of veganism or push people further away from it?
let me know what you think in the comments. i’m genuinely interested to hear from vegans, ex-vegans, vegetarians and anyone who has tried a plant-based diet.
